The breath of God.
The Hebrew word for the breath is “ruach” and is described as the wind, life force or Spirit of any being - whether man, God, or devil. This word describes a literal, rather than metaphorical, essence of the movement of air or rushing wind. In its 378 uses in the Hebrew Old Testament, it is often paired with one of the names of God (ex: Ruach Elohim) to indicate the Spirit of God - what has been translated into the English language as the “Holy Spirit”. This word ruach is also used to indicate the spirit of a man or the conjunction of both the spirits of man and God himself. In such a way that Hebrew is a language of literal definitions rather than metaphorical representations, the physical context of wind and moving air must be taken into account when we consider the Holy Spirit. Remember that the next time you take a breath.
