The Art of Learning
In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, receiving a black belt is the holy grail of mastery. With an average study of 10 or more years to graduate through multiple belt grades, a black belt represents a culmination of technical expertise, discipline and proven experience in the art of grappling. Yet in many ways, becoming a black belt is just another beginning.
Unlike many sports of today, jiu-jitsu does not honor the ego. What might appear a combat sport to the outsider is a test in controlling the temperament of the mind in the flow of chaos - staying one step ahead of Fear. The mark of a great martial artist is the visible evidence of humility and a truly honorable black belt recognizes how much more they have to learn even once they have received the highest rank. The black belt has not become perfect in their principle, but has become a master in the art of learning.
Johnny Souza is a black belt inside and out.
Johnny started the Point One grappling template due to shoulder pain that had limited his ability to train for his sport. He recognized the physical evidence that there was more to learn outside his defensible space and he eagerly pursued his role as a student beyond the classroom. He humbled himself to new beginnings and gave it all the eager energy of a white belt. Like a white belt, he got to experience the exponential growth process that is only available to the truly open-minded novice.
Johnny received his jiu-jitsu black belt one year ago as a masters athlete and competes today among athletes who already have up to a decade of mastery and competitive experience at this level. But you wouldn't know it. In the last couple of months alone, Johnny has had three podium finishes that have landed him international titles and career-driving experiences that will send him worldwide. All the while, his attitude maintains one that is excited for learning at every step of the journey and spreads the authenticity of joy.
We are honored to have Johnny represent the strength found in Point One. Congratulations!
